History

1994:  A group of young writers and visual artists formed a performing group called Tumbang Preso, named after a traditional Filipino children's game wherein slippers (symbolizing art and literature) are aimed at a tin can (symbolizing society's ills).

1997:  Its membership began to include theater artists and musicians.  It was renamed as the Tumbang Preso Multi-media Group.

2000:  To advance a nationalist, mass-oriented and scientific culture, the group was "reborn" as Sining na Naglilingkod sa Bayan (SINAGBAYAN) or Art for the People.

Due to these efforts, SINAGBAYAN finally held its FOUNDING CONGRESS on February 21, 2004 at the Alcantara Hall of the University of the Philippines - Diliman.  It was attended mainly by those who, later on, comprised the National Chapter. The SINAGBAYAN constitution was ratified and the Executive Committee was elected: Marfred Waddell as the Chairperson, Elsie Losabia as the Vice-Chairperson and Pia Corpuz as the Secretary General

From thereon, SINAGBAYAN has established chapters and affiliations in communities and schools; launched educational discussions, fora and skills-development trainings; integrated in various communities; staged various performances and productions; launched and participated in various campaigns; and strengthened its link with the international community.
